ALMOST 6 TIMES SMALLER THAN FIJI, SAMOA HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG TEAM IN INTERNATIONAL RUGBY COMPETITIONS, CAPABLE OF COMPETING WITH THE BIGGEST NATIONS.

Historic runs in rugby's top competition (two quarter-finals played) for a country with a population of just 200,000 is more than just a feat. Samoa even surprised everyone by beating Wales 16-13 in their first appearance at the World Cup in 1991. The key to this success: the Samoan players themselves call it "fa'aSāmoa", or "the Samoan way of being and doing things".

This is reflected in the lively style of rugby, particularly the hard tackling. Nicknamed "Manu Samoa" after an ancient Samoan chief, the Samoan rugby union team has not only left its mark on the history of the sport through its distinctive style. Its mythical blue jersey and its Haka, actually called "Siva Tau" (literally "Fighting Dance" in Samoan), have been the haunt of all their opponents since 1924, the year of their first official match against their neighbours Fiji.
