One Heroes, one storySERJEANT GALLAHER

BORN IN IRELAND IN 1873, DAVE GALLAHER WAS AN EMBLEMATIC 15 A SIDE RUGBY PLAYER

He was Captain of the NEW Zealand team 27 times! He was captain of the very first «Originals» tour of the British Isles, France and North America. The «Originals» managed an almost perfect tour with only one defeat in 30 matches! The Europeans were captivated by their game and their Haka that was discovered during this famous rugby tour. In 1906, the captain Gallaher also became Auckland team head coach and then Head coach for the New Zealand national team. He was a strapping man physically and a great teacher.

Gallaher was a Sergeant during the second Boer war (1899-1902) in South Africa and he decided to fight again when the First World War broke out. He found himself in Belgium the 4th October 1917 and died in combat during the terrible Passchendaele battle. He died a hero and was buried in the cemetery in the Flemish town of Poperinge.
