The Centenary Match 1923 - England-Wales

History of the productTHE CENTENARY MATCH 1923

ON 1ST NOVEMBER 1923 IN THE TOWN OF RUGBY IN ENGLAND AT THE PRIVATE BOYS SCHOOL, THEY CELEBRATED THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST EVER RUGBY MATCH

It was on the huge lawn called The Close, in front of the school that they celebrated the prowess of William Webb Ellis who gave birth to the game of rugby in 1823. It was "with a fine disregard for the rules of football", and running with the ball, that the legend of rugby was born. We now know that this legend was invented in 1895 by the Old Rugbeians, but never mind! The event brought the 4 great rugby nations together ! England, and Wales on one side and Ireland and Scotland on the other.

In front of 2 000 spectators, enthousiasts and players of the first international match in 1871, the two teams played an amazingly dense and physical match. The England-Wales team only just won the match by 21 to 16. SPORTS D’EPOQUE has brought back to life the two jerseys the teams wore at this centenary game. These jerseys are proudly handmade in France.
