A tribute to Liddell and Abrahams, sports heroes in 1924!
Harold Abrahams was the first European to win a title holding off the Americans, Jackson Sholz and Charlie Paddock. His failure to qualify for the 100 m. in Antwerp 4 years earlier was definitely the motivation for his 1924 gold medal win. He wanted revenge and trained continuously. He became one of the pioneers in professional training and preparation for sports events. On the 7th July 1924 in Paris he surprised the world and won the gold medal in the 100m in 10secs. He was wearing the number 419.
Known as « The flying Scotsman » Eric Liddell was an outstanding sprinter. A devout protestant he pulled out of the 100 m. race in 1924 as the final was to be held on Sunday. He entered the 400m instead and won the gold medal on the 11th July 1924, wearing the number 451. His achievement was immortalized in the film Chariots of fire which tells the story of his friendship with Abrahams the other British medal winner in 1924.
