One Heroe, one Story : Sergent Lapize

Born in 1887, Octave Lapize was a cyclist in the early 20th century. He ran the Tour de France 6 times and won it in 1910.

Stocky, stubborn and tough, measuring 1m65 « le frisé » or « Curly » as he was nick-named was the unbeaten French champion from 1911 to 1913.

According to Paul Espeit, another cyclist, he was « one of the greatest cyclists the least spoken about ». Maybe because of the war which would break the promising future of so many athletes !

In 1914 he trained as a pilot and became an instructor in the air force. In February 1917 he went to the front.  A few months later on the 14th July, he was killed in combat aboard his fighter plane of the squadron N90 whose emblem was a singing rooster.

Octave Lapize was buried on the 17th July 1917 in the Toul cemetery in the presence of his father and the Ace Maurice Boyau.
