GOLF 1927

In 1927, a seed merchant called Samuel Ryder decided to create a golf competition that would, one day, become the most prestigious golf trophy in the world.

Although this competition is still called the Ryder Cup it would never have seen the light if it weren’t for a certain Abe Mitchell, Samuel Ryder’s trainer.

Although his name is no longer honoured, on the cup’s lid you will find an effigy of Abe Mitchell to honour this winning team member.

In the beginning the tournament was played by an American team versus a British team. Then it opened up to include Irish golfers in 1973, and then to all Europeans in 1979. This competition has been held every two years since its creation, only interrupted by World War II.
