IN 1851, DURING THE GREAT EXHIBITION, BRITAIN INVITED AN AMERICAN YACHT TO CHALLENGE 15 BRITISH COMPETITORS FOR THE HUNDRED GUINEAS CUP.

On August 22, the schooner America triumphed, finishing 18 minutes ahead. When Queen Victoria asked who came second, she was famously told: "Your Majesty, there is no second."
The Americans, now Defenders, hosted the next edition in 1870, welcoming a Challenger. Renamed the America’s Cup, this competition became legendary. The trophy, a silver ewer, remains the symbol of this rivalry and the oldest sporting trophy in the world.
