JEAN-BAPTISTE CHARCOT BECAME A DOCTOR TO PLEASE HIS FATHER. AFTER GRADUATING, HE SAILED NORTH ON HIS FIRST POURQUOI-PAS?.
Starting as a yachtsman, he then became an explorer with two research expeditions to Antarctica: from 1903 to 1905 on the «Français» and from 1908 to 1910 on a new Pourquoi-Pas?.
During the First World War, he was enlisted as a Navy doctor, and then became commander of an English antisubmarine. In 1936, he disappeared off Iceland on board the Pourquoi-Pas? IV. He was buried in Montmartre cemetery, following a state funeral.
Captain Charcot’s sporting career should also be highlighted; he was the French rugby Champion with the Olympique in 1896, and then won two sailing silver medals in Paris in 1900!
