The Frenchman Charles RIGOULOT was the most famous weightlifter during the inter-war period. He was champion of the middle weight category in 1924 in Paris and set 8 official world records. Strong and stocky, this giant had amazing measurement (chest 132 cm, neck 52 cm and biceps 47 cm). He went on winning world records and exciting the crowds who were fascinated by this herculean strength. In 1926 when he beat Ernest Cadine, his main rival his fans who had come in masse to admire him went wild and gave him the title of strongest man in the world.

When he was injured in 1931, Rigoulot switched to other athletic sports including wrestling and also mechanical sports, he was a real showman with lots of tricks up his sleeve. He also participated in acrobatic shows with his wife. He was taken prisoner in Germany during the war and his legendary strength meant he once bent the prison bars to allow his fellow prisoners to escape! However, they were caught the next day.

Only disease could overcome the immense sportsman. In 1962 , Charles Rigoulot died of cancer.
