THE RAINBOW JERSEY
THE RAINBOW JERSEY FILLS THE DREAMS OF EVERY CYCLIST
Every year, each discipline organizes a one-day event, the World Championship. The most famous event is the professional road race, but the jersey is also awarded for cyclo-cross, BMX, MTB, track and para-cycling events.
The rainbow jersey was introduced in 1922 after the track events. On a white background, the jersey is composed of five different colored stripes: blue, red, black, yellow and green. The name Rainbow is therefore based on a resemblance to the Rainbow rather than a deliberate choice.
Since 1927, many great champions have been world champions on the professional road and have worn the Rainbow jersey in the year following their victory. Five men have won it three times: Alfredo Binda, Rik Van Steenbergen, Eddy Merckx, Oscar Freire and Peter Sagan. Only one woman, Jeannie Longo, holds the record for the number of victories in the women's race, which has been held since 1958. She has won five times.
