Sidewalk surfboard, the ancestor of skateboard

Skateboard is nowadays recognized as a sport in its own right and it has become a way of life for enthusiast amateurs. Originally , Californian surfers had the idea to transfer surf experiences from the sea to the street. The first skateboards were built out of heavy boards and equipped with metallic wheels without ball bearing. The success was limited as it was too difficult for the general public. In the 60’s, it was called “sidewalk surfboard” or “roll surf” and was still not very popular.

Innovation came in the 70’s to change the momentum: two Californians designed a polyurethane wheel. Success was immediate and the phenomenon became global in 1974 with several millions of boards sold around the world. Polyurethane smoothens the vibrations coming from the ground and increases adherence. This improves board control, favors the creation of new figures and leads to the emergence of the “freestyle”.
