Australian Imperial Force
At the end of the First World War, almost 250,000 soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force are waiting to go back to Australia and home.
To keep morale up while awaiting the grand home coming, some sports competitions were organized.
The AIF therefore got a rugby team together lead by their captain, Peter Buchanan : This « Trench Team » started by beating a French team, of “war internationals” lead by Fernand Forgues, then they played the King’s Cup in England. In competition with the other Commonwealth nations, the Australian soldiers did well in winning 12 matches out of 16, leaving the New-Zealanders (what a surprise!) to win the trophy. The AIF team, once back home, participated in reviving the game of rugby in the stadiums and in the hearts of the Australians.
This jersey is a tribute to the courage of these soldiers, all volunteers, who fought so bravely at our side.
