1935 OLYMPIC BIARRITZ
On the 12th May 1935 the Ernest Wallon stadium in Toulouse was packed
Under a blazing sun, 20 000 spectators including 17 000 catalans are squeezed in around the pitch to watch the French rugby championship final : Biarritz Olympique –Union Sportive des Arlequins de Perpignan. Right from the kick-off, l’U.S.A.P. dominated but their kicker missed three opportunities to open the score. On a Catalan attack followed by a long kick forward, there was a knock-on by Sallenave, the Biarittz full back, near his goal line. After the following maul, Haget,the Biarritz fly-half, took advantage of a misunderstanding between the Catalans to recover the ball. The Biarritz captain sprinted through the opposing defense and offered the flanker, Lascaray the victory try (3-0). Monday the 13th May 1935, Biarritz, impatient, await the heros arriving by train at the Midi station. Standing atop a bus, the Biarritz players drive downtown into a immense crowd. Two days later, an immense crowd participated in an organised party along the avenue du Maréchal Foch. Biarritz celebrated their first ever Bouclier de Brennus.
