Considered the n° 1 world player in 1928, 1929 and 1930, the Frenchman, Henri Cochet made tennis history by winning several tennis titles.
Between 1927 and 1932 his list of titles was impressive: he won 7 grand slam tournaments. He beat the biggest names of the time, like Hunter, Tilden or even his countrymen Brugon, Borotra and Lacoste. With the French team he won the Davis Cup 6 consecutive times. The unflappable magician was an instinctive player, Henri Cochet’s talent was in his fine strokes, his rapid play and movements. He caught his opponents out with his magic volley and his formidable smash.
Cochet subjugated by his capacity to overturn matches in his favour and played divinely when in peril. In 1927, he even managed to win Wimbledon after being down 2 sets to 0 once in the quarter final, then in the semi-final and in the final!! This must have been the secret of his magic. History will also remember Monday 30th July 1928 when after his victory over the grand «Big Bill» Tilden, Cochet was carried in triumph by a jubilant crowd!
90 years after Henri Cochet’s first victory at the French Internationals (which became Roland Garros in 1928), Sports d’Epoque takes its hat off to a magician by launching a unique collection dedicated to the musketeer.
