The Frenchman Charles RIGOULOT was the most famous weightlifter during the period between the two great wars. He was champion for the middle weight category in 1924 in Paris and set 8 official world records.
Strong and stocky this giant had amazing measurement (chest 132 cm, neck 52 cm, biceps 47 cm). He went on winning world records and exciting the crowds who were fascinated by this herculean strengh. In 1926, when he beat Ernest Cadine, his main rival, his fans who had come in masse to admire him went wild and gave him the title of the strongest man in the world.
His motto ?
"drinks lots, eat lots and especially train lots".
When he was injured in 1931, Rigoulot switched to other athletic sports including wrestling and also mechanical sports, he was a real showman with lots of tricks up his sleeve. He also participated in acrobatic shows with his wife.
He was taken prisoner in Germany during the war and his legendary strengh meant he once bent the prison bars to allow his fellow prisonners to escape ! However, they were caught the next day. Only discase could overcome this immense sportsman. In 1962, Charles Rigoulot died of cancer.
